Three Types of Winter Heating

Although we tend to have relatively mild winters in Australia compared to other parts of the globe, it is still fascinating to find out about how heat pump systems work and why not all heaters are created equal.

Commercial and Water Heating Systems
There are 3 different types of heat

That comfy and toasty feeling comes from a combination of 80% convected heat and 20% radiant heat from your home space heater.  Although there are three different types of heat pump systems and each provides a slightly different way of enjoying heat. Some are more subtle, while others are obvious and immediate.

Conducted Heat
This is the most subtle and slow methods of heating. It involves conducting heat through solid objects. You would be familiar with this if you have a pot belly stove or wood burning stove in your home. A more modern equivalent is underfloor heating. This is increasing in popularity, and is energy-efficient because it utilises the hot air that rises out of the floor towards the ceiling.

Convected Heat
Convected heat is hot air that expands, gets lighter and rises. Heavier and cooler air stays down closer to the ground. The heated air in a room slowly diffuses some distance from the heat source. The hotter the initial heat source, the further that the hot air will flow on the convection current and heat up the room.  This is a rapid way of heating up a cold room although the most quick heat pump systems are radiant heat and convected heat systems.

Radiant Heat
This is the most instantly gratifying form of heating. Types of radiant heat include the warmth of the sun, or standing in front of an open fire or radiator.  Although this is the least energy efficient of all heating methods.
